To empower seniors to take control of their health, improve their quality of life and maintain their independence

The Healthy Aging Department promotes nutrition education, regular physical activity, and self-management skills to empower seniors to take control of their health, improve their quality of life and maintain their independence. There are six different evidence-based health and wellness programs implemented throughout several counties including Denver, Jefferson, Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas. Programs are held at various independent senior housing sites, churches, recreation centers and older adult center locations. The Healthy Aging staff consists of two Registered Dietitians, two Certified Fitness Professionals and volunteers who instruct programs.

Steps to Healthier Aging Part 1 & Part 2™

The Steps programs are 12 weeks long and consist of group exercise and nutrition education. Steps Part 1contains basic nutrition information and concepts while Steps Part 2 is more in-depth. Participants learn how to eat healthier and move more through applicable nutrition instruction and exercise classes from a Registered Dietitian and a Certified Fitness Professional, respectively. At each nutrition lesson, food samples and healthy recipes are given to participants while the exercise classes utilize weights, thera-bands and pedometers to track steps.

The healthy aging exercise Program

This group exercise program is eight weeks in length and is geared toward people with arthritis and/or other rheumatic conditions. However, you don’t have to have arthritis to participate. The classes are fun and the exercises are gentle, yet very effective. They can be done sitting or standing and instructors will give exercise modifications based on the needs of participants.

diabetes prevention program™

This lifestyle change program is six months to one year in length and instructs participants how to effectively manage their prediabetes. The classes emphasize self-monitoring, self-efficacy, and problem-solving; provide for coach feedback; include participant materials to support program goals; and calls for participant weigh-ins to track progress.

Healthy Moves for Aging Well™

This is a three-month exercise program designed specifically for home-bound individuals to help maintain their independence and improve quality of life. A Healthy Aging Staff member will visit a participant’s home and show them how to do exercises safely and on their own to improve their strength, flexibility and range of motion. Weekly phone calls are then made to help encourage and educate participants to keep moving. Techniques such as motivational interviewing and goal-setting help clients overcome barriers to exercise.

Matter of Balance

This eight week award-winning fall prevention program addresses many issues surrounding the topic of falls including home hazards, community hazards, physical inactivity, medications and more. The classes include 30 minutes of low impact effective exercises and interactive discussion. Healthy snacks and prizes are also included at each session.
