To help seniors live safely and independently in their own homes
The Safety of Seniors Handyman Program provides the services necessary to enhance the quality of life for limited-income senior homeowners age 60 and older residing in Adams, Arapahoe, Denver, Jefferson, Clear Creek and Gilpin counties. The goal of the program is to help seniors live safely and independently in their own homes, allowing them to continue to be a viable part of the community. Skilled volunteer handymen and women are essential to the program and provide clients with safety assessments, education on fall and fire prevention, and perform in-home repairs and safety modifications. The cost of labor is always free.

Home Modifications for Seniors: Aging in Place Safely
Assessment and Repairs
Falls occurring within the elderly population pose serious risks. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately one-third of the elderly population 65 and older who live alone will fall each year. Additionally, of those who fall, approximately one in forty will be hospitalized. The Handyman program focuses on reducing falls and fire prevention and provides the following:
- Thorough Safety Assessment
- Install grab bars in bathroom area
- Install handheld shower
- Install non-flip surfaces in tub or shower
- Repair minor electrical problems
- Repair minor plumbing problems (i.e. running toilet, leaking faucet)
- Repair or replace door handles or deadbolts
- Replace thermostats
- Replace furnace filter
- Install/replace batteries in a smoke detector
- Install CO detector
- Change light bulbs
- Repair stair treads
- Provide night lights (plug-in)
This list is representative, not exhaustive. We may do minor repairs not on the list, depending on what is needed.
Fall and Fire Prevention Education
The Safety of Seniors Handyman Program has undertaken an education initiative to create greater home safety for seniors through education, awareness, collaboration, and active outreach. Through our Fall and Fire Prevention Presentation volunteers and staff educate Denver metro area seniors on fall and fire prevention in an effort to encourage seniors to become more aware of, identify, and correct hazardous factors that lead to home-injury related accidents.
