Sand Creek High School Students Help Formerly Homeless Veterans Plant Garden

Colorado Springs – Volunteers of America Colorado will welcome media on Apr. 22 as cadets from the Sand Creek High School Air Force JROTC join with employees of ENT Credit Union and the United Way to relaunch a community garden, enjoy a block party, and spend time with residents of Freedom Springs.

Freedom Springs is a permanent supportive housing complex that provides formerly homeless veterans with a home, community, case management, and other services. The complex is operated by VOA Colorado in partnership with other agencies and is the only facility of its kind in El Paso County.

Cadets are responsible for planning and coordinating much of this event and receive academic credit. The community garden provides veterans with a calming space and is a point of pride among residents. Clyde, the UCCS Mountain Lion, and dogs from Hero’s Puppy for Life & the Go Team will also be onsite to support the vets and cadets.

“It’s a thrill for the veterans of Freedom Springs to spend time with young people who are interested in serving their country,” said case manager Marcus Davis. “Even better, the work they do in our garden is something the vets can enjoy all summer long.”

Anyone interested in contributing to Volunteers of America Colorado through monetary means or volunteerism can do so at voacolorado.org. If you would like to donate hygiene items to Freedom Springs, please contact Hunter DeSario at hdesario@voacolorado.org.
